As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, (LCSW-R) with a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Columbia University. I have been providing counseling for over 18 years, helping people with everything from anxiety, mild depression, stress management, grief and loss, parenting, caregiving for elderly relatives, work stress, relationship issues, marital problems, trauma, incest, divorce, and retirement to name a few. My counseling sessions last from 45 minutes to one hour. Counseling sessions are offered at my New York City or Brooklyn Heights office, at a time that is convenient for you. The first time you meet with me I will get an overall picture of how you are doing and go over my confidentiality policy with you. I adhere to the social work code of ethics on privacy and confidentiality.
In addition to individual counseling, I offer marital and family therapy. I have completed several post-masters marital and family therapy courses at Hunter College and from The Ackerman Institute for The Family. Couple and family therapy sessions may be longer, up to an hour and a half, and are usually every other week. Progress in couple or marital therapy can be very fast and most issues can be addressed in only a few sessions.
A word about the difference between psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers:
Many people new to counseling and mental health services do not understand why someone would see both a psychiatrist and a therapist. This is because psychiatrists can prescribe medications, while psychologists and social workers can not. Many psychiatrists are doing only medication management, not therapy. So a person who needs a medication for severe depression or anxiety may see a psychiatrist for medication management and a therapist for counseling. Most of my clients do not need a medication, though some do. I refer clients who need a medication to a psychiatrist and can work with your healthcare plan to find one.
